I took on this project as part of my Degree course as an introduction into Arts for Health and Community Arts. From a photography point of view I wanted to teach the students new photographic skills and help improve their confidence in their artistic abilities. I had been told that this class felt art was beyond their capabilities and I wanted to prove them wrong.
I had many different objectives to meet with this project. My degree required that I approach the project from a health perspective, the school needed a photography project that looked at the environment, and the funder needed evidence of developing art in special needs schools.
Having learnt that the class had little confidence in their artistic abilities I decided to make improving their confidence and self esteem my health issue. using the environment gave the project a theme and any of the outcomes would prove the funders help in developing art in special needs schools.
Starting with classroom taught sessions and practical sessions around the school where I covered framing within the camera, distancing from a subject and using flash. We then went on a trip to Salford Quays, Manchester to put their new found skills to the test.
The next gallery are examples of images the class made.
